Educating All Students (EAS 201)
The EAS is required for nearly every New York State teaching certificate. It tests whether you can teach every student — across cultures, languages, abilities, and family situations. Study 27 original modules with five-question challenges and three 100–200 word written case studies. The course is free for signed-in learners for now.
The five competency areas
- 1
Student Diversity in the Classroom
Understanding how culture, language, family, socioeconomic status, and community shape learning — and how to build instruction that respects and uses those differences.
- 2
English Language Learners in the Classroom
Stages of language acquisition, scaffolding academic language, and strategies that let multilingual students access grade-level content while their English develops.
- 3
Learners with Disabilities and Special Needs
IEPs and 504 plans, least restrictive environment, accommodations versus modifications, and the teacher's role in implementing support plans.
- 4
Teacher Responsibilities: Legal and Ethical
Legal and ethical duties: mandated reporting, confidentiality, professional boundaries, and fair, equitable treatment of every student.
- 5
School and Home Partnerships
Partnering with families and caregivers: two-way communication, culturally responsive outreach, and involving parents in decisions about their child's education.
