EAS 201 Constructed Response: The Written Case Studies

Three short essays — one each for student diversity, English language learners, and learners with disabilities — make up about 30% of your EAS score. Most prep ignores them. Here's exactly how they work.

The format: exhibits, then a prompt

Each case study gives you a small student file — typically three exhibits such as a class or student profile, a work sample or assessment data, and a teacher log or plan excerpt. You then write a 100–200 word response to a prompt about that student.

This surprises candidates on test day because it doesn't look like a normal essay question. Practicing with the same exhibit-then-prompt structure is the single best way to prepare.

What the scorers grade

Scorers use a rubric that rewards three things:

  • Evidence: citing specific details from the exhibits, not generalities.
  • Instructional strategy: proposing a sound, research-based support and explaining why it fits this student.
  • Edited American English: clear, correct, professional writing.

A response that summarizes the exhibits without proposing anything, or proposes a strategy with no evidence behind it, scores poorly even if the writing is clean.

A simple structure that works

  1. Identify the need — one or two sentences citing exhibit evidence ("As the work sample shows…").
  2. Propose the support — name a specific strategy and explain why it matches the need you identified.
  3. Monitor progress — close with how you'd check whether the support is working.

Three short paragraphs, 100–200 words, done. Practicing this outline until it's automatic removes most of the time pressure.

Practice with real feedback

Cert-ified's EAS 201 course ends each of the first three competency areas with a written case study in the authentic exhibit format. You write your response in a 100–200 word editor and get formative feedback on relevance, evidence, instructional strategy, and Edited American English — the same dimensions scorers grade.
