NYSTCE Multi-Subject Grades 1–6 Study Guide
A plain-language map of what to study for each part, written in our own words. Use it to find your weak spots before test day.
Part One: Literacy and English Language Arts (221)
- How children learn language: speaking, listening, vocabulary, and grammar.
- Phonological awareness and phonics: sounds, blending, segmenting, and spelling patterns.
- Reading fluency: accuracy, rate, and expression, and how to measure them.
- Comprehension of stories and informational text, including text structure.
- Writing instruction, research skills, and using assessment results to plan lessons.
Study tip: about 60% of the multiple-choice score is literacy knowledge and early reading skills, so practice those first.
Part Two: Mathematics (222)
- Place value, whole-number operations, and properties of operations.
- Fractions, decimals, ratios, rates, and percents — the heaviest single area.
- Expressions, equations, and patterns.
- Measurement, area, perimeter, volume, and shapes.
- Reading graphs and data, and how to teach math concepts and spot student errors.
Study tip: know why procedures work. Many questions show a student's mistake and ask what they misunderstand.
Part Three: Arts and Sciences (245)
- Science: life, earth, and physical science, plus the steps of scientific investigation.
- Social studies: U.S. and New York history, geography, government, and economics.
- Fine arts, health and fitness, family and consumer science, and career development.
Study tip: science and social studies together are about 80% of this part.
